Small
Leather
Goods
Zoë Symonds is a designer and maker of small leather goods.
Each piece is hand made from start-to-finish at her workroom in Rye, East Sussex.
The entire making process uses hand tools exclusively — each piece is hand cut, hand bevelled, hand edged and hand saddle stitched. Saddle stitching takes longer to do by hand than with a machine, but the result is superior in every way — it’s stronger, more flexible, and lasts longer than a machined stitch. The leather is hand selected by me from finest quality Italian vegetable tanned leather, sourced from the Tuscan vegetable tanning consortium.
I work at the scale of the hand, designing and making everything myself to ensure there is minimal waste of carefully considered and sourced materials. I aim for each piece to be desirable, functional and have longevity, so that they are cherished and used for a very long time.
